Do your research to find the causes you want to support. There are places you can go to find out about different nonprofits like Charity Navigator or GuideStar. Also, ask your friends. Everyone has someone they know who they can turn to for advice about nonprofits and giving. Tell people that you're looking for opportunities to give back. It's the same as looking for a job. If you tell others you're looking for a new job, people are going to start forwarding you opportunities that come their way. At The Causemopolitan, I’ve spent a lot of time building our blogroll, and there’s another section called “nonprofits I think are getting it right” as well as news and blogs that are writing about the topic of cause-filled living. I also have a section devoted to places where I’ve volunteered or given money to, as well as a section featuring friends that are in the space doing great things. And I’m always updating.
